Urologists from Germany and abroad have already successfully used the technique on select patients. Initial studies demonstrate that the ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection) technique can even be used to perform en bloc resections of large early-stage cancerous tumors. En bloc resection of the tumor allows pathologists to verify microscopically that the bladder cancer was completely removed and that no tumor remnants remain in the bladder. A randomized multicenter study will now follow, with the aim of confirming initial positive results from an oncological perspective and with respect to long-term rates of recidivism.
