APC in interventional bronchoscopy
Effective recanalization of stenoses, secure hemostasis and reduction of tumors
|
APC is used in therapeutic bronchoscopy interventions for the hemostasis of local and diffuse bleeding (the PULSED APC mode is suitable - see detail picture 2), for the partial or complete recanalization of symptomatic tracheal and bronchial stenoses (see detail picture 1) as well as to remove malignant and benign tumor growths. The use of APC is easier and simpler compared to other techniques (photodynamic therapy, laser); it carries fewer risks and is more economic. |
Indications
- Superficial bleeding
- Benign endobronchial tumors as papillomatoses, granulomas, lipomas, hemangiomas
- Recanalization of malign stenoses of the respiratory tract
- Stent ingrowth/overgrowth
- Scar stenoses
- Post-interventional conditioning of a resected area, e.g. after cryosurgery
Advantages of ERBE equipment
- Rapid, effective coagulation, even of larger areas
- Immediate volume reduction
- Limited penetration depth, minimizing the risk of perforation or cartilage damage
- Minimal smoke plume, therefore good view to the surgical situs
- Target tissue can be reached easily
- Devitalization depth can be adjusted with PULSED APC
- Non-contact procedure
- No damage to metal stents (FORCED APC)
- Economical and safe procedure with few complications

Recanalization of stenoses in the respiratory tract
The use of APC to treat malignant stenoses in the respiratory tract mostly results in an objective improvement of the stenosis and its symptoms and offers benefits for a subsequent therapy which may consist of radio- and/or chemotherapy, stent implantation or an operation. Picture explanation: Stenosing tumor (left fig.), recanalization using APC (central fig.), reopened bronchus (right fig.)

Hemostasis in the tracheobronchial tract
Due to the excellent hemostatic properties of APC, spontaneous bleeding, including bleeding caused by tumors, local or diffuse bleeding as well as bleeding after biopsies taken in the tracheobronchial tract can be staunched effectively and safely.

Stent Ingrowth and Overgrowth
As in the gastrointestinal tract, stent ingrowths and overgrowths in the tracheobronchial tract can be removed using APC.
